Al-Taqwa College

The Islamic Schools of Victoria (Werribee College) Inc was established in 1986 after its founder, Mr Omar Hallak, realised the importance of educating young children in an Islamic environment.  50 acres of land was purchased, and the first school year commenced with one portable classroom and 25 students.  Today the College has grown considerably, offering education from the Preparatory years to VCE.

The College is active in a range of events both in Australia and internationally.  Al-Taqwa was recently involved in the Heartlands Project, which involved students in designing a park bench in conjunction with a local artist.  This bench will be placed in the local park situation in the Heartlands Community Park.  The College is also involved in the debating team with other secondary schools, and this event is held outside of school hours at Williamstown College.

Each year a selected group of students visit the local Sunrise Retirement Village for a chat and morning tea.  We have reciprocal visits with students from both Ilim College and Point Cook College.

There have been field trips to visit the homeless in the City to raise awareness.  We have been working on the new Student Representative Council with a wide range of local activities planned for 2015.  We are looking to participate in the Environmental Youth Summit which will be held in June.  The College has also been involved in various tree planting activities in and around the community.

Each year the College holds a Fete and all community members are invited.  An advertisement is placed in the local paper inviting the community to join in our celebrations.  Over the past few years the fete attendance has grown dramatically.

During the month of Ramadan, the community is invited to attend Iftar.  This is where one person or group hold a dinner each night during the month and invite the community, friends and family to attend.  At the end of Ramadan, the College celebrates Eid, again the whole community is invited to join us.

The College is involved in many international schools visiting and developing strong relations.
