On Wednesday 25 March, Victoria University’s Werribee Campus welcomed 100+ attendees from across industry, education and the local community for a dynamic showcase focused on building workforce capability and driving real impact in Wyndham.
Delivered in partnership with the Committee for Wyndham and Workforce Australia for Individuals (Local Jobs Program), the event brought together leaders and practitioners to explore how stronger collaboration can support local growth, develop talent pipelines and ensure graduates are job-ready.
A highlight of the event was a panel discussion led by VU’s CEO, featuring insights from:
Mr. Wayne Butson – Victoria University
Prof Naomi Dale – School for the Visitor Economy
Prof Mikel Duke – Research
Ms. Annie Kahulugan – St Vincent’s Care Services
Mr. Jack Bishop – Ambulance Victoria
Mr. Eric De Sante – Student Community Services
The panel explored a wide range of critical topics, including emerging trends shaping the visitor economy, future skills and workforce needs, and how education providers can better align training with industry demands.
Discussion also focused on the importance of applied learning, industry collaboration, and preparing students for real-world environments across sectors such as tourism, healthcare, trades and community services.
A strong theme throughout the conversation was the growing need for adaptable, work-ready graduates, with employers placing increasing value on practical experience, soft skills and the ability to respond to evolving industry challenges over the next 3–5 years.
Following the panel, guests boarded a bus where they had the opportunity to tour the campus, with a particular focus on Trades and Health facilities. These hands-on environments showcased how applied learning plays a vital role in preparing students for industry.
The event reinforced a simple but powerful message: when education and industry work together, training becomes more relevant, businesses gain access to skilled local talent, and communities benefit from stronger employment outcomes.
