The Westgate Tunnel project is set to transform our city’s road network and provide significant benefits for local businesses, commuters, and freight transport.
On Tuesday 18 November, Committee for Wyndham members were briefed by Jessica Kakowski – Senior Engagement Officer, Westgate Tunnel Project, Marlen Montevani – Senior Advisor, VIDA Roads and Ash Thomas – Transurban.
Here’s what you need to know:
Key Updates:
- 2 New Tunnels: City-bound (2.8 km) & Outbound (4 km) tunnels
- Westgate Freeway Upgrade: Expanding to 12 lanes, including 3 express lanes for quicker travel
- Freight Relief: 9,000 fewer trucks daily on the Westgate Bridge, improving congestion and road safety
- Enhanced Access: Better routes to the Port and City, making freight more efficient
Community Impact:
- Noise Reduction: Over 9 km of upgraded noise walls, reducing noise for local residents
- Sustainable Design: Expansion of Federation and Kororoit Creek trail – 14 km of walking and cycling paths, complete with lighting and CCTV for safety
- Green Space: Over 17,000 trees planted to enhance the environment
For Freight & Local Business:
- Trucks will utilise the tunnels (outer lanes), freeing up the Westgate Bridge for lighter vehicles
- Improved freight efficiency and reduced daily congestion for businesses across the region
Planning Your Route:
- Inner Lanes: Express lanes to get you to the bridge quickly
- Outer Lanes: Dedicated lanes leading to the tunnel
- Tolls: The Westgate Tunnel is a toll road operated by Transurban, with details available at Linkt. Existing Linkt accounts will manage tolls seamlessly.
Preparing Your Business:
This information shared enables our members to gain insights to help businesses plan and understand how new traffic patterns, tolls, travel efficiencies, employment opportunities and possible short-term disruptions may affect business operations. Having clarity now enables businesses to prepare staffing, logistics, freight movements and customer access well before the tunnel opens.
The tunnel is expected to open in December, creating a safer, faster and more efficient road network for everyone. You can use the Explore Your Journey feature to learn more, or download these documents.
